What Size Dumpster Do I Need?
Sizes explained in pickup truck loads — no math degree required.
It's the first question everyone asks, and honestly, it's the right one. Renting a dumpster that's too small means ordering a second one (and paying twice). Renting one that's too big means paying for air.
Here's the good news: you don't need to measure anything with a tape measure. Dumpster sizes are measured in cubic yards, but the easiest way to picture them is in pickup truck loads. Once you think in truckloads, choosing a size gets simple.
The Quick Cheat Sheet
- 10 yard dumpster — about 3 pickup truck loads. Small bathroom demo, garage cleanup, or a deck tear-out.
- 15 yard rubber wheel dumpster — about 4-5 pickup truck loads. Basement cleanouts, flooring removal, or a big garage purge.
- 20 yard dumpster — about 6 pickup truck loads. Kitchen remodels, flooring across a whole house, or a serious decluttering.
- 30 yard dumpster — about 9-10 pickup truck loads. Full home cleanouts, additions, or big renovation debris.
- 40 yard dumpster — about 12+ pickup truck loads. New construction, full demolitions, or estate cleanouts.
Rubber Wheel vs. Roll-Off: Which One Fits?
Rubber wheel dumpsters (sometimes called dumpster trailers) are the driveway-friendly option. They roll right into place without scratching your concrete, and they're perfect for residential projects like cleanouts, flooring, and yard debris. Roll-off dumpsters are the heavy-duty workhorses. If you're a contractor, doing demolition, or tossing dense material like shingles and concrete, a 10, 20, 30 or 40 yard roll-off is your best friend. They need a bit more room and solid ground to sit on, but they eat big jobs for breakfast.
Rule of Thumb: Go One Size Up
Here's the secret every contractor knows: projects almost always make more debris than you expect. That 'small' garage cleanout turns up an old dresser, three boxes of holiday decorations, and bags and bags of cords you're finally ready to admit you'll never need.
When you're torn between two sizes, go up. The price difference between sizes is usually smaller than the cost of a second dumpster, and you'll sleep better knowing everything fits in one haul.
